Cell Gas Vesicles
The cell periphery is lined with conspicuous gas vesicles of undetermined function: they were previously thought to be involved in buoyancy, but experimental data cast doubt on that idea. Insteaed they are thought to have some participate in positionsing cells parallel to the surface in order to
optimise light exposure for their photoactive pigments. They may also play a role in buffering changes in turgor pressure.
